Learning and Achievement

Learning and Achievement

Our teachers know their students and work with them to help them realise their potential as learners. Our focus on authentic learning and authentic assessment ensures that we challenge our students to grow in their learning and achieve their personal best.

Throughout our community of Sydney Catholic schools, we have shown high performance of our students in measures such as NAPLAN and the HSC.

Student Performance – National and State-wide tests

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tables below show the percentages of students who achieved particular skill bands in numeracy and the aspects of literacy.

2019 Religious Education

Each year students in Year 6 in Sydney Catholic Schools are tested on the knowledge and skills they have acquired as a result of seven years of religious education lessons.  In 2019, 52 Year 6 students achieved, 8 high distinctions, 25 distinctions and 16 credits.

Creative Arts Competition Wakakirri

Mater Dei takes part in Wakakirri, Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools, every second year. In 2018, Mater Dei won: the best comedy story, the best individual makeup and hair award, the best public speaking award and the best creative use of the signature item award.

Gifted Education – ICAS

Each year students from Years 26 are invited to take part in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, or ICAS for short, which is an independent, skills-based assessment program. ICAS recognises and rewards student achievement.

In 2018, there were 158 students at Mater Dei participating across 5 subject areas, with a number of high awards received.

Sporting Competitions

Each year, the children of our school participate in a range of sporting opportunities. All students from K–6 participate in our school Athletics Carnival. Children who are 8 years and older participate in our school Swimming Carnival

Students turning 8 years or older, who demonstrate a high level of skill in a particular sport are able to participate in a range of representative pathway sporting opportunities. Some of the sports include Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Soccer, Netball, Rugby League, Touch Football, Softball, Tennis and Basketball.

In 2018, our school registered 104 athletes in representative sports.
